Airtel launched its 3G service in most of the cities where they got approval.First put your Airtel 2G SIM card in 3G enabled mobile phone.Call the Customer care or know yourself whether 3G service is available in your area or not.
If 3G is available in your area then you may activate it through two methods.
- Call 12134 from your Airtel mobile and activate High Speed airtel 3G.
- Send one message as 3G to 121.You will be asked for confirmation for activating the 3G service,you can give confirmation by just replying 1.
Now your requested 3G service i.e No Rental pack may be activated with 4 hours and airtel 3G settings will be delivered to your phone with in 4 hours from the time of activation.

Yes you can enable the 3G pack directly by sending an SMS from your Mobile Phone.

As you said your Airtel number have Airtel 3G offer since you bought Airtel SIM with Data card.But you are saying that you are able to use EDGE instead of 3G.IF you couldn’t use 3G then there may be two problems.Solution for them is Kindly change your network mode into 3G mode from EDGE.If you already configured your Airtel USB modem in 3G mode then you may not be covered by Airtel 3G tower.Kindly call CC to ensure Airtel 3G signal is available in your area.

Yes,you can but SIM card but its validity cannot be more than 3 Months. As per TRAI rules getting SIM card of any operator in India is not an easy task.Now a days even for Indian citizen it takes many days for Activation.So kindly visit nearest Telecom Showroom for further info.
